[London] Meadham Kirchhoff AW 2012

Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff might have made their mark as the rebels of fashion, with high-octane, riotous shows in the past defying the gravitas and seriousness with which other brands like to endow their catwalk parades. This season was no exception, but not in the way you might think. A seventies inspired collection, the runway event was one big party; the set was draped with tinsel and models exited in bright wigs, mental make-up and hurled glitter at the crowd. There was lashings of shiny fabrics and fur was re-dyed into crazy shades. With a soundtrack of Abba and Mariah's All I Want For Christmas, it put the killer back into kitsch. At the same time, this was no troupe of scantily clad party-girls; in wooly jumper, gingham and the aforementioned fur, they were seriously covered up for people typical at a fun-filled bash. What's more, along with the sequined suiting, the knitwear in funky patters and denim with oh-so-nineties patches were totally translateable to a shop floor; the collection in general was far more commercial than one initially expects after such a show. And despite the all-out exterior of their work, the pair are surprisingly retiring, exiting only for a very quick bow at the end. In the past, they have offered a political message with their work, but with all the doom and gloom around, not least in this apocalyptic year of 2012, there's nothing more fuck-you than putting the disco tracks on and just having a good boogie.
